VALLEY UROLOGICAL ASSOCIATES ESTABLISHES
THE CENTER FOR MINIMALLY INVASIVE PROSTATE CARE™
Designation reflects practice’s experience and expertise in
diagnosing and treating prostate disease

SEWICKLEY, PA., FEBRUARY 10, 2011 -- Dr. Robert W. Doebler, managing partner of Valley Urological Associates, Inc., announced recently that the medical practice, which specializes in the field of urology, has established The Center for Minimally Invasive Prostate Care™. Establishing the center, said Dr. Doebler, is meant to reflect the practice’s focus on, and expertise in, diagnosing and treating prostate disease.

“Our practice has had a long-time emphasis on treating prostate disease,” said Dr. Doebler. “We view this as a center of excellence within our practice. The scope of our diagnostic and treatment capabilities sets us apart as one of the region’s most experienced. At this point our patients won’t see any physical changes in the practice, it’s more about how we view prostate disease and organize our approach in caring for patients.

“More than half of all men over age 50 will experience some prostate-related problems during their lifetimes,” continued Dr. Doebler. “It’s a very common problem that can have a profound impact on quality of life, whether it is benign, as in the case of BPH; cancer; or some other form of prostatic disease. We have the experience and the tools available to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions,” he added.

The phrase “minimally invasive,” explained Dr. Doebler, was chosen because of the practice’s approach to treating prostate disease.

“Each patient is an individual and presents with unique symptoms,” said Dr. Doebler, “and our goal is always to select a therapy or combination of therapies that are the least invasive. Although a patient may, at some point, require radical surgery, we are going to postpone that time for as long as possible in keeping with sound medical practice. There are many non- and minimally invasive options that may be appropriate, and we are always going to attempt those first,” he concluded.

In a related issue, Dr. Doebler noted that he is the first physician in southwestern Pennsylvania to be trained to treat prostate cancer using Focus Surgery’s Sonoblate 500. The procedure known as high intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU, is currently being evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in the United States.

“HIFU is a perfect example of the range of services available through The Center for Minimally Invasive Prostate Care,” commented Dr. Doebler. “It’s one more tool in our armamentarium, it is one more therapy to treat prostate cancer that may be an appropriate choice for some of our patients.”

Currently, Dr. Doebler performs the procedure in Bermuda and the Bahamas along with one of two pioneers in the field, Dr. Stephen Scionti and Dr. George Suarez.

Other therapies to treat prostate disease available through the center and Valley Urological Associates include: microwave (heat) and laser therapy; cryosurgery (freezing); minimally invasive surgical techniques, and open (radical) surgery.
